Pipeline & Process Piping Applications – Stainless Steel Pipe & Tube
Stainless steel pipes and tubes are widely used in pipeline and process piping systems where corrosion resistance, cleanliness, and long service life are essential. Typical applications include refineries, petrochemical plants, chemical plants, power plants, water and desalination facilities, and offshore/onshore pipeline projects.
YES Stainless International supplies welded stainless steel pipe, seamless stainless steel pipe, and seamless stainless steel tube for in-plant process piping, utility lines, and selected transmission pipelines. Our products are manufactured according to international standards such as ASTM A312, A269, and A213, and can be offered in duplex stainless steel for more demanding pipeline environments.
Key Pipeline & Process Piping Applications
- Corrosive liquid and gas lines in refineries and chemical plants
- Process and utility piping in power plants and industrial facilities
- Water, seawater, and desalination pipelines
- Selected oil, gas, and CO₂ transmission lines
- Instrumentation, sampling, and chemical injection tubing
1. Refinery & Chemical Process Piping
In refineries and chemical plants, stainless steel pipe is used in corrosive and high-temperature services where carbon steel cannot provide sufficient lifetime.
Typical applications
- Corrosive liquid lines containing chlorides, acids, or aggressive chemicals
- Hot process streams, hot condensate, and caustic lines
- Acidic and CO₂-rich services where corrosion is a concern
- Overhead and bottom lines in distillation and fractionation units
Product types
- Welded stainless steel pipe (ASTM A312) for large-bore process lines at moderate pressure
- Seamless stainless steel pipe (ASTM A312) for high-pressure, high-temperature, and critical services
- Seamless stainless steel tube (ASTM A269 / A213) for smaller process lines and high-integrity applications
Where higher strength and improved resistance to stress corrosion and erosion are required, we can also offer duplex stainless steel pipe and tube for selected process piping lines.
2. Water, Seawater & Desalination Pipelines
Stainless steel is a proven choice for water and desalination pipelines, especially when handling seawater, brine, or high-purity water.
Typical applications
- High-pressure seawater feed and brine lines in RO desalination plants
- Product water and permeate pipelines
- Industrial and municipal potable water lines
- Firewater and cooling water systems in marine or coastal environments
Product types
- Welded stainless steel pipe (ASTM A312) for large-diameter water and seawater pipelines
- Seamless stainless steel pipe (ASTM A312) for high-pressure sections, pump discharge, and critical connections
For seawater and higher chloride conditions, duplex stainless steel provides increased strength and excellent resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion, making it a strong option for seawater injection lines, high-pressure desalination piping, and coastal projects.
3. Pipeline & Transmission Lines – Oil, Gas & CO₂
For transmission and flowline applications, stainless steel is used where corrosion risk is too high for carbon steel, or where clean media must be transported with minimal contamination.
Typical applications
- Corrosive multiphase flowlines and gathering lines
- Water injection pipelines for enhanced oil recovery
- CO₂ pipelines in carbon capture and storage (CCS) projects
- Selected sections of oil and gas transmission pipelines in corrosive areas
In many of these services, seamless stainless steel pipe is preferred for its high integrity and fatigue resistance. For more demanding combinations of pressure, CO₂, chlorides, and temperature, duplex stainless steel pipe can offer:
- Higher yield strength, allowing for reduced wall thickness
- Greater resistance to CO₂ and chloride-induced corrosion
- Improved resistance to stress corrosion cracking in pipeline environments
4. Utility, Steam & Power Plant Piping
Stainless steel pipes and tubes are also widely used in utility and power plant piping, where high temperature and corrosion issues arise:
Typical applications
- Superheated steam and hot condensate lines
- Boiler feedwater and high-purity water systems
- Thermal oil and high-temperature process heating circuits
- Plant utility lines with aggressive or high-purity media
Product types
- Seamless stainless steel pipe (ASTM A312) for high-pressure, high-temperature steam and utility services
- Seamless stainless steel tube (ASTM A213) for boiler, superheater, and heat exchanger tubes
In the most demanding, high-pressure, and high-chloride environments, duplex stainless steel may be selected to combine strength and corrosion resistance, particularly in water/steam systems exposed to coastal or industrial atmospheres.
