ASTM A249 is the specification for nominal-wall welded and heavily cold-worked welded austenitic stainless steel tubes used in thermal-duty service (heat exchangers, condensers, superheaters, boilers). It defines chemical composition, post-weld cold work before final heat treatment (a core requirement for weld integrity), heat treatment, dimensional tolerances, and qualification tests—including flattening, flange, reverse-bend, hardness/tension, and 100% hydrostatic or ECT.
